PRINTING AND PUBLISHING : TWO WORDS BUT INDIVISIBLE

Printing Publishing
Printing profession was established after the invention of 'Movable Type Printing Press' around 1450 throughout the Europe. Today's printers include :
  • Newspaper printers, that are owned by newspaper publishers.
  • Magazines printers, they are usually independent magazine publishers
  • Book printers
  • Stationary printers
  • Packaging printers
  • Commercial printers
  • Trade printers
Although printing and publishing sounds similar, there's a stark difference between the same. The process of making information available to the general public is known as publishing. Sometimes, the authors are their own publisher. There are several stages in publishing that includes development, copy editing, graphic design, production – printing, marketing and distribution of newspapers, magazines, books, literary works, musical works, software and other works dealing with information, including the electronic media. To have an in depth understanding of various types of publishers, let's preview their tow different categories-
Non-Paid Publishers: The publication houses that do not charge author at all to publish the book are known as non-paid publishers.
Paid Publishers: The author has to meet with the total expense to get the book published and author has full right to set up marketing policies. This is also known as vanity publishing.

The process of printing and publishing is complex. A lot is spent by the publishers in book publishing but usually they hire their own staff to produce a copy. Freelance journalist are also appointed by the publishers. There are many stages in publishing a book that includes acceptance and negotiation wherein once a work is accepted, commissioning editors negotiate for the purchase of copy and agree on royalty rates. After that, in the pre-production stages, one has to follow sub stages wherein each step is of utmost importance. These include editorial stage, design stage and sales and marketing stage.

At the end of editing and designing, the printing phase begins. Printing helps the publisher to find and correct the errors. Some printing companies use electronic proofs rather than printed proofs. Once, the publisher has approved the proofs, printing work begins. Recently, a new printing process has emerged on demand wherein the book is written, edited, and designed but it is not printed until the publisher receives an order of the book from a customer. This procedure reduces printing of extra books. There are many manufactures and suppliers that are involved in the printing and publishing of a variety of books. They deal in greeting and invitation cards, politics and law books, science and technology books, children books etc. Customer can choose the best book and publisher according to their choice and requirements.
